Three men are installing a large window. Two in gray "Chaney" shirts position the window, while a third in a red cap assists on the left. Bright daylight shines through—hinting that this could be the best time of year to replace your windows & doors.

If you’re researching new windows for your home, you’ve probably come across two terms that sound similar, but mean very different things: “replacement windows” and “new construction windows”. Choosing the right style is essential to ensuring your project goes smoothly.

At Chaney Windows & Doors, this is a common question we hear from St. Louis homeowners. In this article, we’ll break down the difference between replacement and new construction windows, explain when each option makes sense, and help you understand which style is the right choice for your project

Replacement Windows vs. New Construction Windows

  • Replacement windows are designed to fit into an existing window opening.
  • New construction windows are designed to be installed when the home is being built or when the existing window frames are being completely removed and rebuilt.

Both serve a purpose, but the right choice depends on your project, your home’s condition and your long-term goals.

What Are Replacement Windows?

Replacement windows (sometimes called “insert windows”) are installed directly into your existing window frame. This option is ideal when your current frames are structurally sound but the windows themselves are outdated, inefficient or damaged.

When Replacement Windows Make Sense

Replacement windows are typically the right choice if:

  • Your existing window frames are in good condition
  • You’re upgrading old, drafty or inefficient windows
  • You want minimal disruption to interior and exterior finishes
  • You’re focused on energy efficiency, comfort and appearance

Most window replacement projects in the St. Louis area fall into this category.

Benefits of Replacement Windows

  • Faster installation – Most projects are completed in one to two days
  • Lower overall cost – Less labor and material compared to full tear-outs
  • Improved energy efficiency – Modern glass, Low-E coatings and insulated frames
  • Preserves your home’s look – No need to disturb siding, brick or trim

At Chaney, we primarily install high-quality vinyl replacement windows because they offer the best balance of performance, durability and value for Midwest homes.

What Are New Construction Windows?

New construction windows are designed to be installed during the building process or when a wall is opened to the studs. These windows include a nailing flange, which allows them to be attached directly to the home’s framing.

When New Construction Windows Are Needed

New construction windows are typically used when:

  • You’re building a new home
  • You’re changing window sizes
  • A full exterior remodel is already underway

This option involves more labor and coordination, especially if siding, brick or drywall must be removed and replaced.

Things to Consider with New Construction Windows

  • Greater flexibility – Ideal for changing window size, shape or placement
  • More invasive installation – Interior and exterior finishes are affected
  • Higher project cost – More labor, materials and finishing work

While new construction windows are the right choice for certain projects, they’re not necessary for most standard window replacements.

Which Option Is Right for Your Home?

For most St. Louis homeowners, replacement windows are the best solution. They deliver modern performance and energy efficiency without the expense and disruption of full reconstruction.

However, if your home has:

  • Extensive water damage
  • Structural issues around the window opening
  • Major remodeling plans already in progress

…new construction windows may be the better long-term investment.

That’s why a professional in-home evaluation is so important. What works for one house may not be right for another.

Why Installation Expertise Matters

No matter which type of window you choose, proper installation is critical. Even the highest-quality window won’t perform well if it isn’t installed correctly.

As a Certified ProVia Platinum Installer, Chaney Windows & Doors follows manufacturer-specific best practices to ensure:

  • Proper sealing and insulation
  • Long-term energy efficiency
  • Smooth operation and durability
  • Protection against air and water infiltration

This level of precision helps your windows perform as intended, season after season.
